At the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced a bold government initiative to revamp Ghana’s mining policy framework. Central to the overhaul is a comprehensive reform of the mining licensing system aimed at boosting transparency, efficiency, and long-term national benefits.
The Minister highlighted that the policy reforms are designed to bring Ghana’s mining sector in line with evolving global standards that emphasize economic gains for the state while promoting environmentally sustainable mining practices.
A notable innovation in the reform agenda is the introduction of “cooperative mining,” a strategy to foster partnerships between large-scale mining companies and local communities. This approach seeks to empower communities with responsible mining knowledge and practices, ensuring that mining activities contribute positively to local development.
Buah underscored that these reforms represent a significant step toward sustainable resource management and are well underway, signaling a new era of mining governance focused on balancing profitability with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
