A Ghanaian software company, Usoft Solutions Limited, has introduced a new digital logistics platform aimed at transforming the transportation of agricultural produce and improving efficiency across the supply chain.
The application, known as AgroCart, is designed to link farmers, traders and cargo owners directly with drivers through a system that functions similarly to a ride-hailing service, but tailored specifically for farm produce and goods transportation.
The platform seeks to address long-standing challenges in Ghana’s agricultural sector, particularly delays in moving produce from farms to markets, which often contribute to significant post-harvest losses.
With AgroCart, users can register either as customers or drivers. Customers are able to request transport services by uploading images of their goods, specifying pick-up and delivery points, or even sending voice notes to place orders, making the system accessible to users with varying levels of literacy.
Once a request is submitted, drivers operating within the same district receive notifications and can respond by submitting bids based on distance and logistics. Customers then select the most suitable option based on cost, reliability and convenience.
Payments are processed within the application and held until delivery is confirmed, after which funds are released to the driver. The system also includes a rating and feedback mechanism to encourage accountability and improve service quality.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of Usoft Solutions Limited, Felix Fosu, said the innovation was developed to tackle inefficiencies in agricultural transportation, which remain a major cause of post-harvest losses in Ghana.
He explained that features such as voice-note ordering were intentionally included to ensure inclusivity for smallholder farmers who may not be literate or digitally experienced.
Mr. Fosu also noted that the platform’s district-based structure was designed to promote local participation, boost economic activity, and ensure equal access across communities regardless of gender or social status.
He further highlighted ongoing government agricultural initiatives such as Feed Ghana and input support programmes, noting that digital innovation must complement national efforts to strengthen the sector.
Addressing environmental concerns, he cautioned that climate change continues to pose risks to agriculture through irregular rainfall, rising temperatures and pest outbreaks. He encouraged farmers to adopt climate-smart practices such as drought-resistant crops, water harvesting systems and improved agricultural training.
The District Chief Executive, Isaac Yawson, welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and relevant to rural development needs.
He said local authorities were also working to improve telecommunications infrastructure and road networks to support digital platforms like AgroCart and enhance agricultural productivity.
The launch of AgroCart adds to Usoft Solutions Limited’s growing portfolio of digital products, including platforms for education, faith-based organisations and electoral processes, as the company continues its push to digitise services across multiple sectors in Africa.
