The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced plans to launch the Free Primary Health Care Policy nationwide this year, aiming to remove financial barriers to essential health services and strengthen community-based interventions.
Dr. Caroline Reindorf Amissah, Deputy Director General of GHS, explained that the policy prioritizes population-level initiatives such as screening for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), health education, and community mobilization. She made the announcement during the 2025 Annual Review Meeting of the Bono Regional Directorate of Health in Techiman.
According to Dr. Amissah, the rollout will include rapid orientation and training of health personnel across the country, including staff at Community-Based Health Planning Services (CHPS) zones, to ensure smooth implementation.
“The GHS remains committed to collaborating with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to address challenges such as staffing shortages, funding limitations, infrastructure deficits, and equipment gaps,” she stated, urging health workers to cooperate fully for a timely and effective launch.
Dr. Freeman Samson Samani, Bono East Regional Director of Health Services, emphasized that the policy would enhance access to primary health care, particularly in underserved communities, while improving referral systems and emergency transport. He highlighted the need to scale up maternal and newborn care as well as NCD prevention and management.
The meeting, held under the theme “Improving Maternal and Newborn Health and NCD Outcomes through Quality and Accessible Primary Health Care,” reinforced the government’s commitment to equitable health service delivery and community-centered interventions across the Bono and Bono East regions.
