The Ghanaian government is preparing to deepen legal cooperation with the United States through planned high-level discussions aimed at resolving pending extradition requests between the two countries.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has revealed that Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dominic Ayine will engage officials of the U.S. Department of Justice in bilateral talks focused on strengthening extradition collaboration and addressing outstanding cases.
The planned meeting follows the successful extradition of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, who was returned to Ghana on June 9 after years of legal efforts by Ghanaian authorities. She was immediately taken into custody by personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service to begin the processes leading to the enforcement of her prison sentence.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, the upcoming discussions are expected to review several extradition matters of mutual interest, including requests submitted by both governments.
Among the cases likely to feature prominently is Ghana’s pursuit of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently under investigation by state authorities. Government officials have indicated that all legal options remain available should an extradition process become necessary.
The talks will also address requests from the United States involving individuals sought in connection with criminal investigations and prosecutions, including a suspect identified as Abu Trica.
The engagement is expected to reinforce judicial cooperation between Accra and Washington while providing a framework for the efficient handling of future extradition cases.
