New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, has rejected suggestions that public opinion should determine who leads the party, insisting that the decision rests solely with party members.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM, Agyepong described claims that the “street” favors a particular candidate as propaganda, emphasizing that the party must first select its nominee before presenting them to the electorate.
“They say mechanics and market women want a certain candidate, but that should not be the case. The party is ours, and the party will choose its candidate. Afterwards, the party will market its candidate to the people,” he said.
Agyepong stressed that allowing public clamor to dictate the outcome undermines party leadership and the principles of internal democracy. He highlighted that all five aspirants must contest fairly, after which the chosen candidate will be promoted to the wider Ghanaian public.
“If we let the street choose, there is no leadership. If popularity alone were the measure, then maybe we should bring in Shatta Wale because he’s the popular one,” he added, using the remark to underscore the importance of structured party processes over external influence.
The comments come amid a highly competitive NPP flagbearer race, where aspirants continue to campaign both within the party and publicly ahead of internal elections.
