Golden Star Wassa Limited (GSWL) has announced its readiness to restart operations at its Benso mining site in the Western Region, marking a significant recovery milestone following a violent incident in 2023 that led to a suspension of activities.
The company’s Group Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Gerard Boakye, disclosed the development at a Western Regional stakeholders’ forum held in Takoradi. The event brought together key institutions including the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, Forestry Commission, Water Resources Commission, and Ghana Immigration Service, along with media representatives.
GSWL halted operations at Benso after illegal miners launched a violent attack on March 16, 2023, resulting in the destruction of 12 vehicles—including an ambulance—and leaving one person dead and four others injured. The incident occurred when the illegal miners clashed with security personnel while attempting to cart away mining dust from the company’s concession.
According to Mr. Boakye, the decision to return was motivated by improved gold prices and significant investment in drilling to reassess the site’s potential. “Over the past few months, we’ve invested several million dollars into drilling, which has helped us set a new baseline for mining at Benso,” he said.
He explained that in the mining industry, high gold prices often trigger renewed exploration in previously dormant areas, especially where operational costs are high. “Now that the market conditions are favorable, we’ve decided to return to Benso and reopen some of the pits we had previously left,” he added.
Mr. Boakye also emphasized the company’s commitment to learning from past challenges. “We’ve taken important lessons from the 2023 incident and are implementing new measures to enhance security and operations at the site,” he stated.
Engagement with local communities has been central to the company’s re-entry strategy. “We’ve had extensive discussions with community members to ensure they fully understand our intentions, and so far, the response has been positive,” Mr. Boakye said. “We’re optimistic that our return will bring increased activity, employment, and economic benefits to the area.”
GSWL’s return to Benso signals a cautious but confident step forward in restoring operations, underpinned by renewed safety protocols and strengthened community relations. The company is expected to begin phased operations in the coming weeks.
