Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has refuted claims that the government plans to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
Speaking to the presidential press corps on Friday, March 7, after President John Dramani Mahama’s second cabinet meeting at Jubilee House, Mr. Jinapor clarified that while the government is exploring ways to improve revenue collection, there are no plans to sell these state-owned power distributors.
“There is no decision to sell ECG or NEDCo. What we are considering is a strategic partnership to enhance revenue collection, which has been a major challenge in the power sector,” he explained.
He assured Ghanaians that ECG and NEDCo will remain public assets and that any reforms will prioritize efficiency and financial sustainability while maintaining government ownership.
“We recognize the importance of these institutions in our energy sector. Any steps taken will be in the national interest to strengthen their operations, not to privatize them,” Mr. Jinapor added.
He urged the public to disregard misinformation regarding the alleged sale of the power companies and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering reliable and affordable electricity.
