The Ministry of Health has announced the introduction and expansion of Post-Basic Specialised Nursing Programmes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s response to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and curb the migration of skilled health professionals.
The move is designed to enhance in-country capacity for managing chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and kidney failure, while aligning with government healthcare interventions including the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) and the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme.
In a statement signed by Chief Director Desmond Boateng on behalf of the Minister of Health, the Ministry said the new programmes will equip nurses with advanced clinical expertise, leadership skills and improved career progression opportunities within Ghana’s health system.
Specialised Areas Introduced
The newly introduced training tracks include:
Critical Care Nursing
Emergency Nursing
Cardiology Nursing
Nephrology Nursing
Endocrinology Nursing
Oncology Nursing
The Ministry indicated that the programmes are structured to meet international standards and will combine intensive classroom instruction with hands-on clinical training over four semesters.
Graduates will earn a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from the University of Cape Coast. They will also qualify for Associate Membership of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives and receive licensure from the Nursing and Midwifery Council – Ghana.

Emergency Nursing will be offered at NMTC–Tamale and the Peri-Operative/Critical Care School at Korle-Bu. Cardiology Nursing will run at Korle-Bu and NMTC–Kumasi, while Nephrology, Endocrinology, Oncology and Critical Care Nursing programmes will be distributed across NMTC–Korle-Bu, NMTC–Kumasi, and EN&T School, Kumasi.

Strengthening Healthcare Delivery
The Ministry emphasised that the expansion of specialised nursing education is a critical intervention in building a resilient healthcare system capable of addressing Ghana’s rising NCD burden. Officials believe the initiative will not only improve patient outcomes but also create better professional opportunities locally, reducing the incentive for specialised nurses to seek employment abroad.
The programme marks a significant step in strengthening Ghana’s domestic healthcare capacity and ensuring sustainable, high-quality care for patients living with chronic illnesses.
