As the nationwide strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) enters its second week, most government offices across Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) remain closed, including key departments at the Hohoe Municipal Assembly.
The industrial action, which began on Monday, March 9, is part of CLOGSAG’s demands for the implementation of a revised salary structure and improved service conditions for its members. Observations by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicate that offices such as Social Welfare and Community Development, Environmental Health, and Cooperatives remain locked, limiting access to routine public services.
Despite the disruption, the Assembly has taken steps to sustain critical operations. Mr Prosper Kumi, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), confirmed that offices of the Municipal Coordinating Director and Accounts Department remain open to manage essential administrative functions.
“Revenue generation is a key priority for the municipality,” Mr Kumi told GNA. “We quickly established a task force to ensure daily collection of revenue continues uninterrupted.” He added that a revenue assessment conducted earlier this year with the support of a third-party agency has also been activated to support the Assembly’s ongoing operations during the strike.
While the absence of technocrats has made daily administration challenging, the Assembly’s proactive measures aim to mitigate the impact of the strike on service delivery and financial stability. Residents, however, continue to face inconvenience in accessing routine government services, highlighting the ripple effect of the nationwide industrial action on local communities.
