The Homowo festival, a celebration deeply rooted in Ga heritage, is set to take on a sporting twist this year as the Greater Accra Table Tennis Association (GATTA), in collaboration with the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), hosts the 2025 National Open Table Tennis Championship on Saturday, August 30, at the D.G. Hathiramani Sports Hall in Accra.
Over 280 players from across the country are expected to compete in the one-day event, which has become an annual fixture blending culture and sport. From seasoned national champions to emerging young talents, participants will battle it out in a tournament that has historically been a launchpad for some of Ghana’s finest players.
The Homowo National Open traces its beginnings to 2006, when the DHL Ga Homowo Open first brought together more than 100 players at the Borstal Institute. Since then, it has grown into one of Ghana’s most respected table tennis championships, producing stars like Mohammed Ali, Celia Baah-Danso, Emmanuel Commey, and Eva Adom Amankwaa, while also attracting international competitors such as Nigeria’s Sunday Ayodele.
GTTA President Mawuko Afadzinu said the Homowo Open is not just about sport but about identity and community.
“This championship is a platform for nurturing champions while promoting our cultural heritage. It’s an opportunity to showcase the richness of the Homowo festival alongside Ghana’s rising influence in the global table tennis community,” he explained.
This year’s edition promises thrilling rallies, fierce rivalries, and moments that capture both the passion of table tennis and the celebratory spirit of Homowo.
