The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has lauded Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and his team for their exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to the Fund-supported program aimed at restoring Ghana’s macroeconomic stability. During a recent meeting, Georgieva expressed her admiration for the significant progress Ghana has made despite ongoing challenges.
Georgieva noted, “The IMF remains a strong partner of Ghana,” reaffirming the Fund’s continued support in the country’s pursuit of sustainable growth. This endorsement came shortly after Ghana reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF on the fourth review of its Fund-supported program, setting the stage for the release of 370 million dollars upon formal approval by the IMF Executive Board.
The achievement is seen as a major triumph, particularly considering that several structural benchmarks and quantitative targets had previously been breached under the prior administration. Under Dr. Forson’s leadership, the government has swiftly implemented critical reforms to reverse Ghana’s economic downturn, creating optimism about the country’s economic future.
Key reforms have included addressing the large accumulation of payables in 2024, which had negatively impacted Ghana’s fiscal targets. The government has introduced bold measures to strengthen spending controls, restore budget credibility, and ensure long-term fiscal sustainability.
Noteworthy progress has been made, with the government completing key structural benchmarks originally slated for the end of 2024 and 2025. This accomplishment underscores the government’s commitment to delivering reforms ahead of schedule, despite the economic hurdles faced.
In attendance at the meeting were several key figures, including Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Seth Tekper, Senior Economic Advisor, and Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission.
