The legal challenge that threatened to derail preparations for the funeral of highlife icon Daddy Lumba has crumbled after the Accra High Court struck out an application seeking to halt the ceremony.
The move came when the applicants failed to comply with a court directive to pay GH¢2 million into court by 2:00pm today.
Earlier in the day, the court had questioned whether the immediate family had been adequately involved in the funeral arrangements, noting from affidavits that key relatives may have been sidelined. To ensure fairness while protecting ongoing preparations, the judge recalled lawyers for all parties and imposed the requirement for the applicants to defray costs already incurred.
However, the applicants were unable to meet the deadline. Their failure effectively nullified their plea, leading the court to lift the injunction that had momentarily placed the funeral in limbo.
Family head’s counsel, Thomas Kwadwo Osei, welcomed the outcome, describing it as a significant relief that allows the family to proceed without further legal uncertainties.
The temporary injunction had caused anxiety among mourners and fans—many of whom had already travelled to Kumasi—raising fears that the ceremony might be postponed. With the court striking out the case, the funeral will now continue as planned tomorrow, bringing an end to the legal distractions that briefly overshadowed preparations for the celebrated musician’s final rites.
