An unemployed man who reportedly went in search of casual work at a lorry station in the Western Region has been remanded into police custody by the District Magistrate Court in Enchi after being accused of stealing GH¢20,000 belonging to a trader.
Abraham William Abudu Hakim pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court, but His Worship Lawrance Buanor-Bue deferred sentencing to May 14, 2026 while ordering that he remain in police custody.
Police Inspector Stephen Offei Asante, who prosecuted the case, told the court that the complainant, Genevieve Gyan, is a trader operating a drinks shop at the Asankrangwa-Takoradi lorry station, where the accused was known to her.
According to the prosecution, Hakim approached the complainant on May 4, 2026, around 9:30 a.m., requesting to be employed as a labourer. The trader reportedly agreed and allowed him to assist in arranging items in her shop.
He is said to have worked in the shop until about 1:00 p.m. that same day. After he left, the complainant discovered that GH¢20,000 in cash—kept alongside her daily sales—was missing.
Suspicion quickly fell on Hakim, prompting a search that led to information that he had been spotted at a location where cannabis was allegedly sold. He was later found there with the help of local residents and handed over to police at Asankrangwa.
Police re-arrested and cautioned him, after which he admitted the offence. He is also reported to have surrendered GH¢13,200 in his possession to investigators.
The court has since ordered that he remain in custody as proceedings continue.
