A final-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Daniel Tuffour, has been remanded for the second time as investigations into the death of his girlfriend, Joana Deladem Yabani, continue.
Yabani’s lifeless body was found on the university campus on February 27, 2025, prompting an intense investigation. CCTV footage allegedly captured a man, believed to be Tuffour, strangling her following an altercation.
Authorities arrested Tuffour hours after the incident, and he was subsequently arraigned before the court, where he was remanded into custody. At his second court appearance, prosecutors informed the court that the case docket had been forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for advice.
Given the pending legal review, the prosecution requested that Tuffour remain in custody, a motion the court upheld. The case has been adjourned to April 1, 2025, by which time the Attorney General’s input is expected to guide the next legal steps.
The case has sparked discussions about campus security and the safety of students, with calls for enhanced protective measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The university administration has assured students and faculty that it is working closely with law enforcement to improve campus safety and support affected individuals.
Meanwhile, legal analysts suggest that the Attorney General’s advice will be pivotal in determining the charges Tuffour may face and the trajectory of the trial. Until then, he remains in custody as the legal process unfolds.
