The Board Chair of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Titus Beyuo, has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that the Health Minister donated beds to the hospital following a viral video that sparked public concern.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, appeared to show patients lying on the floor at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre, triggering debate about conditions at the country’s premier health facility.
However, Prof. Beyuo clarified that the beds referenced in those reports were already procured and installed by the hospital prior to the visit of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
“That is misreporting,” he stated in an interview, explaining that the procurement process had been ongoing and was not linked to the minister’s visit or the viral footage.
The clarification challenges earlier claims that approximately 200 beds were donated in response to the incident, which had heightened public scrutiny of healthcare infrastructure at the facility.
Hospital management, including Chief Executive Officer Yakubu Seidu Adam, has consistently maintained that patients captured in the video were seated while awaiting admission, and not receiving treatment on the floor as widely alleged.
The development highlights concerns over the rapid spread of misinformation, particularly on social media, and its potential to shape public perception of critical national institutions.
Authorities say while the concerns raised about healthcare delivery are valid, accurate reporting remains essential to ensuring informed public discourse.
