The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Dominic Afriyie, also known as “GH,” to 120 years’ imprisonment with hard labour and life imprisonment for his involvement in a violent robbery and murder in Atasemanso.
The verdict, delivered on Thursday, May 15, by His Lordship Mr. Abdul Razak, ESQ, follows an exhaustive investigation and a full trial in which a seven-member jury found Afriyie guilty on charges of robbery and murder. Law enforcement authorities and the general public have welcomed the decision as a strong deterrent against violent crime.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on November 20, 2021, when Afriyie broke into the home of Michael Dela Agbo Klu, a pharmacist and building contractor, and fatally shot him after stealing two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH₵1,500 in cash.
Following the crime, the police intensified surveillance in the Atasemanso area, acting on intelligence about a planned robbery. This effort culminated in the arrest of Afriyie and three others on December 31, 2021, during a preemptive operation. The suspects were apprehended in a Toyota Corolla with registration AS 5970-20, where officers discovered two pistols and two single-barrel shotguns.
Subsequent investigations confirmed that Afriyie acted alone in the murder of Mr. Klu, despite his attempt to involve other suspects. Although he pleaded not guilty during the trial, the weight of evidence presented by the prosecution led to his conviction.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Region, lauded the court’s decision and emphasized the dedication of the police force to maintaining public safety.
“This conviction sends a clear message that violent criminals will not escape justice. Our commitment to safeguarding communities remains unwavering,” DSP Ahianyo stated.
Residents in the Atasemanso community have expressed relief at the outcome, with many praising the swift and decisive action of the police. Community leaders also highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration between law enforcement and the public to ensure a safe environment for all.
