Lack of Recreational Facilities Is Undermining the Future of Ghana’s Black Stars – Nii Afotey Botwe II

Ghana’s enduring passion for football has long united communities, inspired generations and projected the nation’s identity onto the global sporting stage. Yet, as the Black Stars continue to search for renewed consistency and international success, concerns are mounting that the roots of Ghana’s football excellence are gradually disappearing. For the Nungua Otinnor Mantse and Chief Executive Officer of New Life Nungua Children’s Home International, Nii Afotey Botwe II, the country’s football challenges begin far from the national stadium they begin in communities where children no longer have places to play.

Speaking to the media, Nii Afotey Botwe II argued that the decline of Ghana’s football development pipeline is closely linked to poor community planning and the steady disappearance of recreational spaces that once nurtured generations of talented footballers.

According to the traditional ruler, rapid urbanisation and uncontrolled land development have transformed many open fields into residential and commercial properties, leaving thousands of young people without safe environments to discover and develop their sporting abilities.

He lamented that football parks and community playgrounds, once considered essential public assets, have gradually been sacrificed in the race for urban expansion, with little regard for the long term consequences on youth development.

“In the past, almost every community had playing fields where children discovered their talents and dreamed of wearing the Black Stars jersey. Today, many of those spaces have disappeared or have been converted into other developments,” Nii Afotey Botwe II observed.

He maintained that the disappearance of these recreational facilities has significantly reduced opportunities for informal football, which historically served as the foundation upon which many of Ghana’s greatest football legends built their careers.

Beyond the loss of playing grounds, Nii Afotey Botwe II also pointed to the gradual decline of inter schools sports competitions and community football tournaments, describing them as critical platforms that once enabled coaches and scouts to identify promising young talent across the country.

He stressed that rebuilding Ghana’s football fortunes requires a deliberate return to grassroots sports development, where structured competitions, accessible facilities and community participation become central pillars of national sports policy.

“How do we expect to produce world class footballers when our communities have no recreational centres? Development is not measured only by buildings and roads; it must also create opportunities for sports, recreation and healthy living,” he stated.

The traditional ruler emphasized that every modern housing project and urban development plan should include dedicated spaces for football parks, playgrounds, gyms and indoor sports facilities, just as planners allocate land for schools, hospitals and other essential public services.

He called on town planners, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, developers and traditional authorities to work collaboratively to preserve existing recreational lands while creating new sporting infrastructure in expanding communities.

According to Nii Afotey Botwe II, investing in community sports facilities extends beyond football success. It also contributes to improved public health, youth empowerment, crime prevention and stronger social cohesion within neighbourhoods.

He further encouraged government to deepen partnerships with the private sector, corporate organisations and sporting institutions to finance grassroots football programmes capable of identifying and nurturing the next generation of national stars.

“When we invest in community sports, we are investing in disciplined youth, healthier families and the future success of the Black Stars. The journey to international glory begins in our neighbourhoods,” he remarked.

The Nungua chief observed that many countries dominating world football today have built strong national teams by consistently investing in grassroots academies, school competitions and accessible community sports infrastructure over several decades.

He believes Ghana possesses abundant football talent capable of competing with the very best in Africa and beyond, but warns that such potential cannot flourish without deliberate planning, sustained investment and protected recreational spaces.

Sports analysts increasingly agree that youth development remains the backbone of long term football success. Accessible facilities, structured competitions and effective talent identification systems continue to define the world’s most successful football nations.

For Nii Afotey Botwe II, restoring Ghana’s football greatness will require more than tactical changes or coaching appointments. It demands a national commitment to rebuilding the sporting environments where dreams first take shape. By protecting recreational spaces and investing in grassroots sports infrastructure, he believes Ghana can once again produce generations of footballers capable of restoring the Black Stars to the summit of African and global football.
