Liverpool’s return to pre-season training this week has been marked by solidarity and remembrance following the sudden deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva.
Players and staff postponed their scheduled comeback, instead traveling to Gondomar, Portugal, to attend the public wake and funeral, where captain Virgil van Dijk and manager Arne Slot led an emotional tribute.
Back at Melwood, the squad has transformed the training ground into a space for collective healing. Floral tributes from Liverpool Women’s stars Grace Fisk and Gemma Bonner join those laid by the men’s team, while a growing shrine outside Anfield honors Jota’s legacy. The club has also provided on-site counselling, recognizing the mental health impact on teammates.
As Liverpool prepares to face Preston North End on July 13, the focus is on channeling grief into unity. “We’re coming back together stronger, supporting each other on and off the pitch,” defender Andy Robertson said, reflecting the team’s determination to honor Jota’s memory through resilience and camaraderie.
