Manchester United are moving closer to completing a major midfield signing after reaching an agreement worth around £35 million with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson.
The 26-year-old is expected to undergo medical tests in the coming weeks, with the deal likely to be finalised ahead of the club’s pre-season preparations in early July. His arrival forms part of United’s broader effort to rebuild their midfield ahead of the new campaign.
The transfer comes as the club adjusts to changes in its engine room, following the departure of veteran midfielder Casemiro. United’s recruitment focus has increasingly shifted towards strengthening central areas after previous windows prioritised attacking reinforcements.
There is also growing uncertainty around the future of Manuel Ugarte, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 for a reported £50 million. Limited playing time towards the end of last season has fuelled speculation that he could leave before the transfer window closes.
If Ugarte departs, Ederson would join a midfield group featuring Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, and club captain Bruno Fernandes, though all three are typically deployed in more advanced roles. That situation could push United to pursue further reinforcements in midfield.
The club is also keeping tabs on West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, although no formal offer has been made and the London side reportedly values him at around £80 million.
Ederson’s reputation has grown significantly after strong performances in Serie A, where he has made over 100 appearances for Atalanta and contributed both defensively and in attack, earning recognition at international level with Brazil.
The move signals the start of what could be a busy transfer window at Old Trafford as United reshape their squad for the new season.
