Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea, as the Women’s Super League champions continue strengthening their squad ahead of a demanding domestic and European campaign.
The left-back is expected to leave Chelsea after six years at the club, where she made 173 appearances and established herself as one of the most consistent defenders in the league.
During her spell in west London, Charles collected an impressive trophy haul, winning five WSL titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups. She was also part of the Chelsea squad that reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2021 under former manager Emma Hayes.
Her departure marks the end of a successful era at Chelsea and comes as the club continues to reshape its squad, following recent high-profile movements in the women’s game.
Manchester City, who clinched their first WSL title in a decade in May, are aiming to deepen their squad as they prepare to compete on multiple fronts, including a renewed push in the Champions League.
City’s recruitment drive has already seen them linked with several major names, as they seek to add experience and quality across key positions.
Charles is expected to bring valuable top-level experience, both domestically and in Europe, to a City side focused on sustaining its resurgence at the top of English women’s football.
The England defender will also be hoping that the move provides her with regular first-team football as she looks to strengthen her case for continued involvement in Sarina Wiegman’s national team plans ahead of major international tournaments.
Her arrival adds further strength to a growing City squad determined to challenge for silverware across all competitions in the coming season.
