The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has donated sanitation equipment to the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDKMA) to strengthen the Assembly’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding.
The donation was made during a community clean-up exercise organised as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s two-day nationwide clean-up campaign.
The exercise saw MIIF’s management and staff, led by the Fund’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Justina Nelson, join officials of the Municipal Assembly in clearing drains, removing waste and trimming overgrown vegetation despite early morning rainfall.
The clean-up covered areas near the Embassy of Togo through to the enclave of the Embassy of the United States of America, where participants desilted clogged drains and cleaned major streets to improve water flow.
To support ongoing sanitation efforts, MIIF presented the Assembly with wheelbarrows, machetes, rakes, shovels and brooms to facilitate regular environmental maintenance.
Speaking during the exercise, Mrs Nelson said the initiative formed part of MIIF’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policy and reflected the institution’s commitment to sustainable community development.
She explained that the exercise also aligned with the government’s Reset Agenda, which seeks to encourage collective action in addressing sanitation challenges across the country.
“This initiative is imperative. It is in line with the Reset Agenda of President John Mahama for us to come together to clean Ghana for our collective good,” she said.
Mrs Nelson urged Ghanaians to complement such initiatives by adopting responsible sanitation practices and avoiding indiscriminate disposal of waste.
She also announced that MIIF intends to make community clean-up exercises a regular feature of its corporate social responsibility programme to support healthier and cleaner communities.
The Municipal Environmental Health Officer for La Dade-Kotopon, Mr Isaac Okumtey Anim, welcomed the donation, describing the equipment as timely support for the Assembly’s sanitation operations.
He said the Assembly required additional logistics to effectively carry out environmental health activities and assured MIIF that the equipment would be used to enhance sanitation services within the municipality.
Mr Anim also commended the management and staff of MIIF for actively participating in the exercise, saying partnerships between public institutions and local authorities were essential to sustaining clean and flood-resilient communities.
