The father of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has reiterated his call for transparency in uncovering the circumstances that shaped his son’s troubled music career and eventual death.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, Joseph Aloba said he would not remain silent in the face of recent attempts to downplay the struggles his son endured while signed to Marlian Music, the record label owned by rapper Naira Marley.
Aloba recounted how he once visited Marley’s home after Mohbad confided in him about difficulties within the label. According to him, that visit exposed troubling realities.
“I went to see Naira Marley over some of the things Mohbad had said, and that was all. But later, a lot of other things happened that I personally witnessed,” he said.
He added that individuals close to the label had confirmed mistreatment of his son:
“One of the boys working with Naira Marley came to me directly and told me that he was beating Mohbad. These are things I can’t just ignore.”
On financial disagreements, Aloba explained that disputes over the control of Mohbad’s income further strained relations. He recalled Naira Marley insisting Mohbad channel earnings through his personal account instead of an external one, which raised concerns about transparency.
Earlier this week, Naira Marley publicly distanced himself from the controversies, claiming he only sought to guide Mohbad, particularly after learning of his alleged drug use.
But Mohbad’s father maintains that there is more to the story. For him, speaking out is not about blame-shifting but about ensuring his son’s voice is not silenced even in death.
“I just want the truth to be known,” he stressed, adding that those who witnessed events while Mohbad was alive must be courageous enough to testify.
