H. Kwasi Prempeh, Chairman of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, has criticized the decision by Majority MPs on the Foreign Affairs Committee to visit the Ghana Embassy in Washington, DC, calling it a “wasteful free ride.”
This comes after the Foreign Affairs Minister, Okudzeto Ablakwa, dissolved the embassy’s IT department following revelations of corruption involving visa applications being redirected to a private company. The Minister temporarily shut down the embassy and later reopened it with new staff to restore accountability.
Despite the Foreign Affairs Committee’s plan to conduct an on-site inspection, Prempeh questioned the need for the visit, arguing that detailed reports from the Minister and Ambassador should suffice for oversight purposes.
