NAIMOS Destroys Water Pumps and Washing Plants at Illegal Mining Site

Ghana’s intensified campaign against illegal mining has produced another significant enforcement action, with 13 suspected illegal miners arrested during an intelligence led operation at Sanso in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The operation, conducted on July 31, 2026, was led by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Security Secretariat and personnel of the 4th Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The coordinated operation targeted suspected illegal mining activities in Sanso, an area within one of Ghana’s historic gold producing zones. The deployment underscores the increasing reliance on intelligence led interventions to identify and disrupt mining operations operating outside the country’s regulatory framework.

Thirteen suspects were arrested during the operation and taken into custody for further investigation. Their arrest represents the latest enforcement action in a wider national campaign seeking to disrupt illegal mining networks and protect communities and natural resources from the consequences of unregulated mining.

“The Sanso operation demonstrates that illegal mining enforcement is moving beyond machinery seizures to the identification and prosecution of suspected operators.”

In addition to the arrests, the joint team seized two excavators believed to have been used in the mining activities. The removal of heavy machinery is a critical component of enforcement operations because excavators can significantly increase the scale and speed at which mining sites are developed.

The operation also resulted in the destruction of two waterpumping machines and two washing plants associated with the suspected illegal mining activities. The equipment was dismantled as part of efforts to disrupt the operational capacity of the mining sites.

The intervention comes against the backdrop of Ghana’s continuing struggle to balance the economic importance of its mineral resources with the protection of land, water bodies and communities. Illegal mining has remained one of the most difficult environmental and security challenges confronting the country.

Sanso’s location within the Obuasi Municipality adds further significance to the operation. The wider Obuasi area has a long association with gold mining, making the enforcement of mining regulations particularly important in preventing unregulated activities from undermining legitimate mining and environmental management.

The 13 suspects were subsequently transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra for further investigation. Their transfer marked the transition of the operation from the initial field enforcement stage into the formal investigative and judicial process.

“An effective anti illegal mining campaign must ultimately move from the mining site to the courtroom.”

Following the investigations, the accused persons were presented before Circuit Court 7 in Accra. The court remanded them into police custody, with their next appearance scheduled for August 13, 2026.

The judicial proceedings place the Sanso operation within a broader effort to ensure that enforcement actions are followed by due process. Arrests and seizures alone cannot resolve illegal mining unless investigations are properly conducted and cases are handled through the appropriate legal channels.

The seizure of the two excavators and destruction of the pumping and washing equipment also demonstrate the importance of targeting the logistical infrastructure behind illegal mining. Without access to machinery and processing equipment, operators face greater difficulty sustaining large-scale activity at affected sites.

For NAIMOS and its security partners, however, the challenge extends beyond a single operation. Illegal mining networks can adapt rapidly, relocate to new areas and seek replacement equipment, requiring authorities to combine intelligence gathering, field operations, surveillance and prosecution.

“The real test of enforcement is whether disruption at Sanso can translate into lasting protection for Ghana’s land and natural resources.”

The Sanso operation therefore sends a broader signal about Ghana’s evolving response to illegal mining: security agencies are increasingly combining intelligence with coordinated deployments to identify suspected operators, seize machinery and hand cases over to the justice system.

As the 13 accused persons await their next court appearance, the operation highlights the continuing determination of Ghanaian authorities to confront illegal mining through coordinated enforcement and legal action. For communities across the country’s mining regions, the expectation is that such interventions will contribute not only to arrests and equipment seizures, but also to the long term protection and restoration of Ghana’s natural environment.
