Some trotro drivers and their conductors, popularly known as mates, have been arrested by the National Security Monitoring and Evaluation Team over alleged unauthorized increases in transport fares.
The operation follows growing complaints from commuters who accused some commercial drivers of charging as much as GH₵20 for trips from Circle to Kasoa—a move that triggered outrage among passengers.
The sudden fare hikes reportedly caused chaos at several transport terminals, with heated confrontations breaking out between commuters and transport operators.
Some passengers were left stranded after refusing to pay the increased fares, while others expressed frustration over what they described as exploitation by drivers.
Authorities say the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to enforce approved transport fares and protect commuters from arbitrary charges.
The crackdown is expected to continue as officials monitor transport terminals to prevent further unauthorized fare increases.
