The National Investment Bank (NIB) PLC has stepped up its institutional partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces, pledging GH¢1 million as seed funding toward a major housing redevelopment project at Burma Camp.
The contribution signals more than financial support — it reflects the bank’s renewed strategic direction as it undergoes transformation and capital strengthening.
At a brief cheque presentation ceremony, NIB’s Managing Director, Chief Dr. Doliwura Zakaria, described the donation as both a demonstration of loyalty and a reaffirmation of a longstanding relationship between the bank and the military.
He acknowledged the Armed Forces’ continued confidence in NIB, particularly during the bank’s restructuring phase, and said the housing initiative’s national importance made it imperative for the bank to contribute.
“In view of the strategic importance of this initiative, we are pleased to provide one million cedis as seed funding,” he stated.
Banking Reform and Expansion
Dr. Zakaria disclosed that NIB is currently implementing a structured transformation programme under the guidance of its majority shareholder, the Government of Ghana. As part of efforts to reinforce its capital base, the bank plans to float shares in the near future.
In a move aimed at enhancing financial inclusion within the military community, he also announced board approval for the establishment of a dedicated NIB branch at Burma Camp before the end of the year.
The proposed branch is expected to improve access to tailored banking services for service personnel and their families.
Military Housing Drive Gains Momentum
On the military side, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, welcomed the bank’s support and commended NIB’s recent turnaround.
He highlighted accommodation as one of the Armed Forces’ most pressing challenges, revealing that government discussions have resulted in a plan to deliver 10,000 housing units nationwide over the next five years.
To complement the national target, the military intends to construct an additional 250 housing units at Burma Camp under its redevelopment project.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong announced that a major launch and fundraising event for the housing initiative is scheduled for April 18, 2026, and invited corporate bodies — including NIB — to support the effort.
The ceremony concluded with an exchange of honours: NIB management presented a citation to the Chief of Defence Staff in recognition of his leadership, while Lt. Gen. Agyapong presented a military plaque to Dr. Zakaria for his role in steering reforms at the bank.
The partnership underscores a shared commitment to institutional strengthening — one focused not only on financial recovery but also on improving the welfare of those serving the nation.
