The Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has returned from a critical working visit to China, aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of Ghana’s lottery sector.
The visit, which included high-level meetings with technology giants Genlot Game Technology and Huawei, focused on exploring cutting-edge solutions to modernize lottery operations, expand services to rural areas, and combat illegal paper-based betting.
Strategic Engagement with Genlot Game Technology
Mr. Abdul-Salam’s visit commenced in Shenzhen, where he held comprehensive discussions with Genlot Game Technology’s leadership, including CEO Franz Liu and CTO Hui Shou. The NLA delegation was briefed on Genlot’s latest lottery technologies, including secure Point-of-Sale (POS) systems designed for low-infrastructure environments, which could be key to extending NLA’s reach into underserved regions.
The Ghanaian team expressed particular interest in Genlot’s scalable POS systems, which promise to eliminate unregulated lottery sales while enhancing transparency and accountability. The discussions also explored the possibility of integrating Genlot’s hardware with Huawei’s advanced cloud and cybersecurity platforms, creating a robust digital ecosystem for the NLA.
Immersive Learning at Huawei Executive Exchange
The delegation also participated in the Huawei Executive Exchange at the tech giant’s Shenzhen headquarters. This session featured live demonstrations and presentations by Huawei’s top experts, including Xia Zun, COO of Huawei Global Public Sector BU, and Ian Zhu, Head of Huawei Ghana’s Enterprise Business Group. The focus was on leveraging AI, cloud computing, and 5G connectivity to improve operational efficiency, data security, and customer experience within the lottery sector.
Huawei’s Shannon and Planck Halls offered hands-on experiences with next-generation technologies, from smart city systems to state-of-the-art network solutions, providing the NLA delegation with valuable insights into the future of digital public services.
Cultural Exchanges and Strategic Outcomes
Beyond the boardrooms, the delegation explored Huawei’s sprawling European Town campus in Dongguan and visited cultural landmarks like the Sanyapo Library, gaining a deeper appreciation for the company’s innovation-driven ethos.
The visit concluded with a strategic review, identifying key takeaways that included:
-
The critical role of Genlot’s POS systems in extending lottery services to rural Ghana.
-
The importance of Huawei’s digital infrastructure for securing and scaling NLA’s operations.
-
The potential for collaborative pilot projects to drive innovation and capacity building.
Next Steps for Digital Modernization
Following the successful trip, the NLA plans to establish a technical committee to assess the proposed technologies from Genlot and Huawei. Discussions for a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Huawei Ghana are also expected to commence soon, laying the groundwork for a digitally driven future for Ghana’s lottery sector.
Mr. Abdul-Salam expressed optimism about the potential impact of these partnerships, noting that the integration of cutting-edge technology will be crucial for the NLA’s long-term growth and competitiveness.
