Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Diewait Ikpechukwu, whose commanding portrayals of traditional rulers and authoritative figures earned him a place among the Nigerian film industry’s familiar faces.
Ikpechukwu died on Thursday, November 5, 2026, aged 71, with the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) confirming his passing on Friday, November 6.
AGN National President, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, announced the death in a tribute, describing the actor as another industry legend whose contributions and memories would endure.
The late actor built a career spanning more than two decades, featuring in several productions, including Evil Men, alongside Pete Edochie, Python King, The Guilty and Omera.
Beyond acting, Ikpechukwu contributed to the growth of the industry through his involvement in the Actors Guild of Nigeria, where he served as chairman of the Enugu State chapter and supported emerging talents.
His career in entertainment followed an earlier sporting ambition. He was reportedly an accomplished footballer in the 1970s and received an invitation to join Nigeria’s national team, the Green Eagles.
He later worked as a radio sports commentator before transitioning into acting and establishing himself in Nollywood.
Ikpechukwu is survived by his wife, Gloria, children and grandchildren.
His death represents another loss to the Nigerian film industry, particularly among the generation of performers who helped shape Nollywood through their roles and contributions behind the scenes.
