The Northern Regional Police Command has intensified its fight against drug-related crime, arresting 77 suspects during coordinated raids in the Tamale Metropolis and Savelugu Municipality.
The operations, conducted on Monday, March 23, were led by the Command’s Special Operations Team, “Red Maria,” targeting known drug hotspots to curb peddling and other illicit activities. A total of 33 police personnel took part in the exercise, which began around 9:30 p.m.
Chief Inspector Luckman Niendow Alhassan, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said the operation started with a raid in Lamashegu, Tamale, leading to the arrest of one suspect, followed by another arrest in the Aboabo market area where a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine was recovered.
Intelligence-led searches also led to the arrest of an alleged supplier in the NOBISCO area of Tamale, although no illegal substances were found at his residence. Acting on further intelligence, the team conducted a major raid in Savelugu, apprehending 74 additional suspects at a known drug peddling enclave.
Confiscated items included seven motorbikes, a Toyota Camry, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol. All suspects are in police custody and are being screened, with those found culpable expected to face court proceedings.
The Northern Regional Police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding communities and combating drug-related offences, urging the public to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing law enforcement efforts.
