The Nzema-East Municipal Assembly celebrated Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with a large-scale sanitation exercise in Axim, the municipal capital, focusing on environmental health and community engagement rather than the traditional parade.
The clean-up, led by Herbert Kuah-Dickson, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and Kofi Arko-Nokoe, Member of Parliament for Evaloe Adjomoro-Gwira, involved sweeping streets and shores, weeding bushy areas, and desilting blocked gutters.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Kuah-Dickson praised the active participation of Assembly staff and personnel from security agencies, emphasizing that proper sanitation is vital for public health and the survival of residents. He added that the exercise was a deliberate shift from involving schoolchildren in parades under the scorching sun, promoting a more practical and community-oriented celebration.
Mr Arko-Nokoe noted that the initiative served as a cost-effective alternative to traditional Independence Day events, saving public funds while fostering a sense of communal responsibility. He also highlighted that collective efforts like this would contribute to restoring Ghana to its former glory through active citizen participation.
The Assembly expressed hope that the clean-up exercise would become an annual tradition, encouraging sustained environmental awareness and civic engagement in the municipality.
