A major road crash involving a tipper truck and a Sprinter bus has left several people feared dead and others injured at Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The collision occurred on Thursday morning, leaving the Sprinter bus badly mangled and trapping a number of passengers inside the wreckage.
Although the exact number of casualties had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting, unconfirmed accounts indicated that between eight and 10 people may have died.
Emergency responders, including personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), were deployed to the scene to rescue trapped passengers and provide assistance to survivors.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS, rescue teams were working to cut through the wreckage and evacuate victims requiring urgent medical attention.
A female passenger, whose legs were reportedly severed during the collision, was among those rescued and transported from the scene by ambulance.
The GNFS described the situation as volatile as its personnel continued efforts to bring the rescue operation under control.
Authorities have cautioned against relying on preliminary casualty figures, as the final number of deaths and injuries had not yet been established.
The crash has also disrupted traffic on the busy Accra–Kumasi Highway, with part of the road temporarily restricted to allow emergency crews to carry out rescue and clearance operations.
Motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra have been advised to use the outer lane, slow down when approaching the crash site and give way to emergency responders.
The GNFS urged motorists to exercise extreme caution around the area while rescue and recovery operations continue.
