A football fan has been arrested following allegations of racist abuse directed at Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo during Everton’s 3–3 draw with Manchester City at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.
Merseyside Police confirmed that the 71-year-old Everton supporter was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after the incident was reported by spectators and match stewards.
He has since been granted bail, with strict conditions barring him from being within one mile of any designated sports stadium during matchdays, including four hours before and after fixtures.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from both clubs.
Manchester City strongly criticised the abuse directed at Semenyo and also condemned what it described as “vile racist social media posts” targeting defender Marc Guehi following an error that led to Everton’s opening goal scored by Thierno Barry.
The club said it is fully supporting both players and welcomed the prompt response from Everton and law enforcement authorities.
Everton also issued a firm statement rejecting all forms of discrimination, stressing its zero-tolerance stance on racist behaviour.
The Merseyside club praised the quick action taken by fans and stadium officials in identifying the suspect, describing the collaboration as key to addressing the incident.
Both clubs have reiterated that discriminatory behaviour has no place in football or society, as investigations continue.
