A joint operation led by the Korle Bu District Police Command and National Security has successfully recovered electrical cables and other equipment, believed to be part of the missing containers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Tema Port.
The operation, which followed a tip-off on Saturday morning, targeted a scrap dealers’ site located near the Korle Bu Mortuary in Accra. The recovered materials are suspected to be part of the 1,328 containers that went missing from the Tema Port, valued at approximately GH¢1.5 billion.
Korle Bu District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kingsford Appiah, confirmed the operation, stating that while the materials had been retrieved, no arrests were made as the suspects fled upon the approach of the security forces. The police operation also involved the National Security team, who swiftly secured the impounded items for safekeeping.
Leader of the National Security team, Mr. John Sey, informed the Ghanaian Times that the materials had been moved to the National Security warehouse at Abelemkpe, where they will be kept pending further investigation.
The incident involving the missing ECG containers at the Tema Port has drawn national attention, prompting the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, to order a thorough investigation. The investigation will focus on how 1,328 containers went unaccounted for, while 2,491 containers were recorded as being at the port. The disappearance has raised concerns over potential lapses in procurement and security protocols at the port.
Mr. Jinapor stressed the importance of recovering the containers and ensuring accountability, stating that the missing containers represent a significant loss for the ECG. He further revealed that the ministry had taken immediate steps to secure the remaining containers, moving them to a more secure facility with round-the-clock surveillance provided by National Security.
The case has ignited calls for swift action to prevent future losses and restore confidence in the management of ECG assets. The investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances behind the disappearance of the containers and identify those responsible for the breach.
