A swift and tactical police response in the early hours of Sunday has led to the arrest of one suspect following a violent armed robbery along the Kasoa-Winneba highway, raising both alarm and renewed calls for increased highway security.
The Central East Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest of Mohammed Bello, who was apprehended near Dabanyin, close to Gomoa Buduatta Junction, shortly after the robbery occurred around 3:00 a.m.
Police say Bello was part of a five-member armed gang that ambushed several vehicles, terrorizing drivers and passengers while making away with valuable personal items including mobile phones, cash, and other belongings.
Thanks to a rapid police deployment, Bello was intercepted as he attempted to flee the scene. A search on him yielded GH₵3,740.00 in cash, multiple smartphones, accessories, a woman’s purse, and other items later identified by one of the victims. Also among the seized items were five sticks of cigarettes, a pair of sandals, a wristwatch, and a power bank.
The robbery, which resulted in gunshot injuries to four victims, has intensified security concerns on one of Ghana’s most traveled road corridors. All injured victims are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby facility and are reportedly in stable condition.
Bello is currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations, while law enforcement officers have launched a manhunt for the four remaining suspects believed to be at large.
The Central East Regional Police Command has assured residents and commuters that it is ramping up surveillance and deploying intelligence-led operations to root out criminal elements operating along the Kasoa-Winneba stretch.
“We are committed to ensuring that every member of this gang is brought to justice,” a police source told the media. “We urge any member of the public who may have been affected or has information to come forward and support the investigation.”
Victims and eyewitnesses have commended the police for their prompt intervention and called for increased patrols, especially during the early morning hours when such attacks are more likely to occur.
As the case develops, the arrest marks a significant breakthrough in what could have been a deadly and prolonged criminal operation, reinforcing the crucial role of rapid police response in ensuring public safety on Ghana’s highways.
