A swift police response to an armed robbery incident at Tema Community Five on Monday morning has resulted in the death of two suspected armed robbers after an exchange of gunfire with officers.
According to the Ghana Police Service through the Tema Regional Police Command, the incident occurred around 08:30 hours at Aba Fosuah Plaza, where a mobile money vendor was attacked during what initially appeared to be a routine transaction.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that one of the suspects, who arrived on a motorbike as a pillion passenger, posed as a customer seeking a cash-out service. While the vendor attempted to process the transaction, the suspect allegedly produced a pistol and demanded a bag containing cash.
During the confrontation, the victim resisted, resulting in a struggle in which the suspects forcibly took the cash bag and fled the scene on their motorbike after the vendor sustained a gunshot injury to the leg.
A police patrol team, already deployed within the area on security duty, responded immediately after a distress call was received and pursued the fleeing suspects.
The suspects were intercepted near a junction close to Smart Hotel, where they reportedly opened fire on the pursuing officers. Police returned fire, and both suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange.
The injured suspects were transported to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
A search conducted on them led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three Android mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a motorbike key, and GH¢11,390 in cash. Police also indicated that a Ghana Card found on one of the suspects belonged to the robbery victim.
The injured mobile money vendor is receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
The police have assured the public of continued efforts to enhance security in the area and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
