The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a Chief Inspector in the Ashanti Region over allegations that he owned several unauthorised structures erected along the Subin Stream in Kumasi and rented them out to commercial sex workers.
The allegations surfaced during a demolition exercise led by a special task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), which targeted illegal structures built behind the COCOBOD building at Asafo BB in Adum.
According to the Police Service, the officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, is alleged to be the owner of a number of the structures marked for demolition.
In a statement, the Service described the allegations as a matter of serious concern and confirmed that investigations had commenced.
It assured the public that further updates would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
The demolition exercise was disrupted after some occupants of the settlement allegedly resisted the operation, attacking soldiers and city guards deployed to clear the area.
The group reportedly pelted the task force with stones and other objects, damaging two pickup vehicles and an excavator being used for the demolition.
The attack left the vehicles with smashed windscreens and punctured tyres, while three members of the task force, including a soldier, sustained injuries.
Speaking on Luv FM, the Head of Physical Planning at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Benjamin Agyenim-Boateng, alleged that the police officer owned approximately 12 makeshift structures within the enclave.
Meanwhile, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi, has vowed that the Assembly will return to complete the demolition exercise.
He said the next operation would be carried out without prior notice to prevent further resistance and ensure the successful removal of the illegal structures.
The Assembly has maintained that the exercise forms part of efforts to reclaim waterways and public lands, improve sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding within the Kumasi metropolis.
