The Accra Regional Police Command has intensified security in Omanjor and surrounding communities following the violent clashes at the Chief’s Palace during the Homowo Festival on Saturday, August 30, 2025, which left three people dead and several others injured.
In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, the police assured residents that they were working tirelessly to restore calm and bring all perpetrators to justice.
As part of the operation, police arrested Christian Saka Ahianyevi, 35, a private security officer, and Newton Alotey, 26, a dispatch rider. The arrests were made on August 30 and 31 respectively, following an intelligence-led operation involving both the Accra Regional Command and the Special Support Unit from Police Headquarters.
According to the statement, a locally manufactured pistol, a cutlass, and other weapons were seized from Ahianyevi, while 18 spent BB cartridges were recovered from Alotey. The two are currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
Police say a strong security presence has been maintained in the community to prevent further disturbances.
“The Regional Police Command urges all factions and residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies,” the release said, adding that anyone with credible information about other suspects still at large should reach out via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
Community leaders have also been urged to support ongoing peace efforts to ensure that the annual Homowo celebrations — a time of unity and tradition — are not marred by violence.
