Prudential Life Insurance Ghana has unveiled the seventh edition of the PRURide Cycling Fun Ride and Elite Races, with organisers positioning the event as a platform to promote fitness, environmental awareness and the growth of cycling in Ghana.
The annual cycling event, which is themed “Pedal for Health, Ride for a Green Future,” will take place on August 22, 2026, at the University of Ghana, Legon, and continue with the elite races on September 6, 2026, at the Borteyman Stadium Traffic Light in Accra.
Launching the event at the University of Ghana Stadium, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Richard Kofi Akpokavie, praised Prudential Life Insurance Ghana for its sustained investment in cycling development.
He urged the company to deepen its collaboration with the Ghana Cycling Federation to help identify and nurture talents capable of representing the country at major international competitions, including the Olympic Games.
According to him, the company’s consistent support had contributed significantly to raising the profile of cycling in Ghana.
“The courtship between Prudential and cycling must develop into a marriage because your support has been consistent,” he said.
This year’s competition will feature a 112-kilometre Elite Race for male and female cyclists, with winners in both categories set to receive trophies and cash prizes of GH¢15,000 each.
Cyclists who place between second and tenth positions will also receive cash rewards, while special recognition awards will be presented to outstanding participants, including the oldest and youngest riders.
Participants in the 30-kilometre Fun Ride will receive medals after completing the challenge.
Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Mr Baba Tanko, who delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the sector Minister, Mr Kofi Adams, said the government remained committed to supporting initiatives that encouraged active lifestyles and increased participation in sports.
The Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, Madam Jane Dornukuor Mingle, expressed optimism that the 2026 edition would attract a larger turnout, particularly from students and young people.
She said the event aligned with the company’s broader objective of promoting healthier lifestyles and encouraging sustainable practices among Ghanaians.
Meanwhile, the University of Ghana has announced plans to establish a permanent cycling club to compete in activities organised by the Ghana Cycling Federation.
The Director of Sports and Wellness at the University’s Sports Directorate, Mr Austin Luguthera, said the institution recognised sports as an important tool for personal development and was committed to creating more opportunities for students.
The Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority also pledged their support to ensure the successful organisation of the event.
The PRURide Cycling event continues to serve as one of Ghana’s major cycling platforms, combining sports promotion with advocacy for healthier lifestyles and environmental responsibility.
