Veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has officially expressed his readiness to lead Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, describing his appointment as a “mission” grounded in responsibility, humility, and ambition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, who brings decades of experience in international football, was appointed head coach of the Black Stars by the Ghana Football Association as part of preparations for the tournament to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In his first remarks following the appointment, he thanked the GFA for the opportunity and pledged to approach the role with full commitment.
“It is with a deep sense of gratitude, responsibility and humility that I embrace this new chapter with the National Football Team of Ghana,” he said.
Queiroz said his career across different continents has prepared him for high-pressure assignments, noting that Ghana represents both a challenge and an opportunity to build something meaningful.
He described Ghana as a country with deep footballing identity, talent, and pride, adding that he respects its history and believes strongly in its future.
“This is not just another job — it is a mission,” he said, stressing the need for unity, discipline, and collective effort to meet national expectations.
The appointment adds Ghana to a long list of national teams coached by Queiroz, including Portugal, Iran, South Africa, Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar. He has also managed top clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United.
With four World Cup appearances as a head coach, Queiroz has previously led South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, guided Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.
He is expected to begin preparations immediately as Ghana builds towards a challenging Group stage campaign at the 2026 World Cup, where the Black Stars will face Panama, England, and Croatia.
The Ghana Football Association says his appointment is aimed at strengthening the team’s tactical structure and improving performance on the global stage as the country targets a strong World Cup showing.
