President John Dramani Mahama has called on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to draw inspiration from the party’s history while remaining firmly focused on building a stronger future for Ghana.
Addressing party faithful during a commemorative event in honour of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, President Mahama stressed that the purpose of remembering the past should be to inspire greater achievements rather than encourage complacency.
“History teaches us where we have come from and helps us understand where we need to go. But while we honour our past, we must never become prisoners of the past. The true purpose of remembering history is to inspire future achievements,” he stated.
The President urged the current generation of NDC members to build upon the foundation established by Rawlings and other pioneers of the party, noting that the responsibility of safeguarding and advancing their legacy rests with today’s leadership and membership.
He emphasized that the NDC’s mission should remain centred on serving the Ghanaian people and strengthening the institutions that have sustained the party over the years.
According to him, the best way to honour the sacrifices and contributions of the party’s founding figures is through unity and commitment to the ideals that shaped the NDC.
“Let us remain focused on our shared mission to serve the Ghanaian people. The best tribute we can pay to those who built this tradition is to preserve its unity and strengthen its institutions,” President Mahama said.
He paid tribute to Rawlings, describing him as a leader who, together with many patriots, worked under challenging circumstances to advance social justice, democratic governance, national development and the empowerment of ordinary citizens.
President Mahama also commended the NDC leadership, including the National Chairman, General Secretary, Council of Elders and party members, for organising what he described as a historic event to celebrate the enduring legacy of the party’s founder.
He said Rawlings’ contributions continue to inspire many Ghanaians and should serve as a guide for future generations seeking to advance the country’s democratic and developmental aspirations.
