The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has rolled out a series of stringent security measures aimed at curbing potential unrest and restoring calm in the region in a swift response to the assassination of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase.
The decision, which includes an immediate curfew on motorbike use after 7:00 pm in Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis, signals growing concern over the potential for reprisal attacks and heightened ethnic tensions.
Addressing the press on Friday, July 25, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene said the emergency security directives followed a REGSEC meeting held on July 23, in the wake of the chief’s killing at Asawase. The late chief was fatally shot in an incident that has shocked the community and stoked fears of retaliation.
Beyond the curfew, REGSEC has also placed a ban on unregistered motorbikes and those lacking proper lighting—vehicles which security experts say are increasingly being used in drive-by shootings and other criminal activities. Riders have also been warned against wearing smocks, a piece of traditional attire the council believes has recently been exploited to conceal weapons.
The regional authorities have also suspended a local intertribal football tournament indefinitely, citing concerns over the fragile nature of inter-ethnic relations following the killing. “We cannot take any chances,” the Regional Minister said. “We need to de-escalate and create space for healing and dialogue.”
Security forces, including the military and police, are expected to intensify patrols and establish strong visibility in known flashpoints. These actions, REGSEC hopes, will deter further violence and assure residents of the government’s resolve to maintain order.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, Dr. Amoakohene stressed the council’s commitment to ensuring justice is served and peace is restored. He appealed to residents to remain calm, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid acts that could inflame an already sensitive situation.
The late Alhaji Azenbge’s death has not only dealt a blow to the Kusasi community but has also exposed deeper tensions simmering beneath the surface in parts of the Ashanti Region. As the investigation continues, the spotlight remains on REGSEC’s ability to stabilize the situation and prevent further tragedy.
