Cristiano Ronaldo has offered his strongest indication yet that his illustrious football career could be approaching its final season, saying he expects the current campaign to be “probably” his last.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain, who remains under contract with Al Nassr until June 2027, has previously acknowledged that retirement is getting closer but had avoided giving a clear indication of when he would walk away from professional football.
However, in an interview with Vogue published on Sunday, Ronaldo suggested that the end could now be within sight.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” he said.
The comments could mark the beginning of the final chapter of a career spanning more than two decades and featuring some of the biggest clubs and honours in world football.
Ronaldo had previously said he expected to continue playing for another one or two years and confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament.
Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the round of 16 last month, with Ronaldo scoring three goals during the competition.
Ronaldo Prepares for Life After Football
The veteran forward said he had already started planning for life beyond professional football and was looking forward to spending more time pursuing personal interests and enjoying life with his family.
“I have my future all mapped out,” Ronaldo told Vogue, adding that he had numerous activities and interests that could occupy his time once his playing career ends.
He said he would like to travel more, watch and play padel and spend time enjoying the rewards of a career that has demanded significant sacrifice.
“Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice,” he said.
Ronaldo’s comments came in an interview conducted five days before his marriage to his long-term partner, Georgina Rodríguez, in Cascais, Portugal.
His latest remarks have intensified speculation that the football world could soon witness the retirement of one of its most decorated and influential players.
One of Football’s Greatest Careers Nears End
Ronaldo began his professional career at Sporting CP before moving to Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, eventually joining Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr in January 2023.
His most prolific period came during his nine-year spell at Real Madrid, where he scored a club-record 450 goals in 438 appearances.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has also established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in international football and remains a central figure for Portugal.
His possible retirement comes at a time when another generation-defining player, Lionel Messi, has also raised questions about his own future.
Messi recently said he was uncertain about how much longer he would continue playing following the death of his father, Jorge.
While Ronaldo has not confirmed a retirement date, his latest comments suggest that the conclusion of his playing career could be closer than previously expected.
For now, the Portuguese star appears focused on making his remaining time on the pitch count and ensuring that his final years in football add to a legacy built over 25 years of elite competition.
