Fresh concerns over safety on the Volta Lake have emerged following a fatal boat accident that claimed nine lives, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of safety measures.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 9, 2026, involved a passenger boat travelling from Yeji to Makango. Reports indicate the vessel was caught in a severe storm and capsized between the Sikape and Matayoko fishing communities.
Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, Member of Parliament for Pru East, has pledged a full-scale investigation into the disaster, assuring that authorities will establish the exact cause of the accident.
While expressing condolences to the bereaved families, he stressed the need for accountability and preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies.
According to Gabriel Kofi Alorsey, the Salaga District Police Commander, 15 people were on board at the time of the incident, with only five survivors rescued.
The tragedy has renewed attention on safety compliance on inland waterways, with authorities urging boat operators and passengers to strictly observe protocols such as wearing life jackets and avoiding travel during adverse weather conditions.
The incident adds to growing concerns about transport safety on the lake, widely used by communities for movement and trade, highlighting the urgent need for improved regulation and enforcement.
