Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that freedom of speech remains fully protected under the current administration, while urging citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public discourse.
Speaking during a brief appearance at a press conference organised by the Minority Caucus on Tuesday, June 9, the minister emphasized that the government remains committed to upholding constitutional rights, including freedom of expression.
However, he noted that the exercise of free speech must be accompanied by a sense of responsibility, particularly at a time when national unity and social cohesion remain critical to Ghana’s development.
Mr. George stressed that while every citizen has the right to express their views, public comments should be made in a manner that promotes peace and protects the collective interests of the country.
“We have a country to protect and we will build our country together. Free speech will be protected under this government and every other government, but we should also be responsible in our utterances and that is all we are asking for,” he stated.
The minister reiterated that Ghana’s democratic credentials are rooted in the protection of fundamental freedoms and assured citizens that there was no intention to curtail those rights.
He further called for greater national unity, urging Ghanaians to recognize their shared responsibility in safeguarding the country’s stability and progress.
“We have one country, one people and so, be rest assured, your freedom of speech is guaranteed,” he added.
His remarks come amid ongoing national conversations about public discourse, civic responsibility and the role of free expression in strengthening Ghana’s democratic governance.
