World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has been ruled out of this year’s US Open after failing to recover fully from a right knee injury.
The Italian confirmed his withdrawal on Friday, saying he and his medical team had concluded that he needed more time to recover despite making progress in his rehabilitation.
Sinner returned to training on court in Monte Carlo in recent days, but the sessions showed that he was not yet ready to compete at Grand Slam level.
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” Sinner said.
The 24-year-old expressed his disappointment at missing the tournament, highlighting his strong connection with New York and his desire to compete in front of the US Open crowd.
The withdrawal is a major blow to the tournament, with Sinner having established himself as one of the leading figures in men’s tennis and the current world No. 1.
His absence also comes at a significant moment for the sport’s top players. Just a day before Sinner’s announcement, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz confirmed that he was ready to return to competitive tennis after spending four months sidelined by a wrist injury.
The contrasting developments leave the US Open picture uncertain, with Alcaraz preparing to make his comeback while Sinner focuses on completing his recovery.
Sinner’s decision to step away from the tournament reflects the need to avoid rushing his return and risking further complications with his knee.
For the Italian, missing the New York Grand Slam represents a particularly painful setback, given his enthusiasm for competing at the tournament and the importance of the US Open calendar in the battle among the world’s leading players.
Sinner will now have to continue his rehabilitation with his return date yet to be confirmed.
