South Africa women’s national under-20 soccer team saw their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign come to an end after a narrow home defeat to Ghana’s Ghana women’s national under-20 football team at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
The tie had been finely balanced at 2–2 following the first leg in Accra, leaving everything to play for in the return encounter. However, a second-half goal proved decisive as Ghana edged the contest 3–2 on aggregate to book their place in the final round of the African qualifiers.
South Africa began with intent, hoping to capitalise on home advantage, but Ghana remained organised and patient. The turning point came in the 63rd minute when substitute Priscilla Mensah finished calmly after being set up by a determined solo effort from Jessica Appiah.
The goal shifted momentum, forcing the hosts to push forward in search of an equaliser. Their best opportunity arrived in the 78th minute, but Ghana goalkeeper Jenna produced a crucial save to keep her side ahead.
Despite late pressure, South Africa were unable to break through Ghana’s resilient defence, as the visitors held on to secure progression.
The victory keeps Ghana on course for what would be an eighth consecutive appearance at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Poland this September, while South Africa are left to reflect on a tightly contested tie that slipped away in the closing stages.
