Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has painted a grim picture of Ghana’s current state, describing the nation as being at its lowest point. However, he believes President John Dramani Mahama’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) has injected fresh optimism into the country’s future.
Following President Mahama’s first SONA on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Bagbin took to Facebook to reflect on the challenges Ghana faces while acknowledging the president’s commitment to economic recovery.
“Clearly, our country is not in good shape. The decay is massive. Ghana, an African icon, is at our lowest point,” he wrote, emphasizing the dire state of the economy and governance.
Despite this, the Speaker expressed optimism, stating that Mahama’s speech instilled confidence in a turnaround. “But the address of President John Dramani Mahama is rejuvenating. It’s stimulating confidence about quick recovery, resetting, and restoration to a more rewarding investment climate and social justice,” he noted.
As a long-time advocate for persons with disabilities, Bagbin highlighted his joy over the government’s decision to make tertiary education free for disabled individuals.
“This bold move to provide free tertiary education for persons with disabilities is commendable. It marks a significant step toward inclusivity and social justice,” he added.
Bagbin concluded his message with a call for unity and resilience, urging Ghanaians to rally behind efforts to rebuild the nation.
