Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has called on the media to play a central role in enhancing the image of Ghanaian sports to attract sponsorships and drive development.
During a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) on Wednesday, the minister emphasized that sports is not just a recreational activity but a thriving industry that requires strong media backing to grow and succeed.
The meeting served as an opportunity for SWAG to officially welcome him as the new minister, while also discussing key issues concerning sports development in Ghana.
Reviving Grassroots and School Sports
Minister Adams outlined President John Mahama’s vision to revamp sports development, particularly from the grassroots. He noted that upcoming policy reforms will focus on reviving community sports programs and restoring school competitions, which have been declining due to lack of funding and infrastructure.
While acknowledging funding constraints as a major challenge, he assured that the ministry would explore innovative financing solutions to bridge the gap and ensure sustainable sports development.
Strengthening Media and Ministry Collaboration
Recognizing the media’s role in shaping public perception, the minister encouraged constructive criticism from journalists, emphasizing that balanced reporting—combining accountability with encouragement—can positively impact national sports teams.
“I welcome media scrutiny, but I also urge journalists to balance criticism with motivation. A strong media presence can inspire our athletes and attract the investment we need to build a stronger sports industry,” he said.
He further pledged an open-door policy, ensuring consistent engagement with the media and stakeholders to build a collaborative approach to sports management.
SWAG Pledges Support
SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah, who led the delegation, expressed gratitude for the minister’s warm reception and affirmed the association’s commitment to working closely with the ministry to promote and strengthen Ghana’s sports industry.
He urged the minister to prioritize collaboration with various sporting disciplines and make Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup a key focus.
Delegation and Reception
The SWAG delegation included Vice President Evelyn Nsiah-Asare, Secretary-General Charles Osei Asibey, Deputy Secretary-General Kenneth Odeng Adade, Women’s Commissioner Mavis Amanor, and Executive Board Members Augustine Kwabena Ohene-Bampoe Brenya, Franklin Anane-Gyimah, and Tilda Elinam Acorlor.
They were received by Mr. William Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
With renewed collaboration between the ministry, media, and stakeholders, expectations are high for a new era of growth and transformation in Ghanaian sports.
