The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has rejected allegations that government officials and political figures benefited from sponsored travel arrangements to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He insisted that the distribution of free match tickets was handled strictly on a non-partisan basis, with no involvement of political considerations or favoritism.
His clarification follows the conclusion of government’s free World Cup ticket support programme, which covered only the group stage matches and was not extended into the knockout rounds.
Addressing concerns over transparency, the Buem MP stated that no Members of Parliament, ministers of state, or Chief Executive Officers were included among beneficiaries of the initiative.
“No Member of Parliament, Minister of State or CEOs were sponsored by government to the World Cup. We did not give any slots to any constituencies,” Mr Adams said in an interview with Sporty FM.
He further responded to concerns raised by some Ghanaian supporters abroad who expected broader access to the ticket support scheme, explaining that the arrangement had clear limits in scope and coverage.
Mr Adams expressed regret over any misunderstanding surrounding the programme, stressing that its implementation was intended to be fair and free from political influence.
