Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has issued a strong warning to the public over fraudulent individuals and middlemen falsely claiming to secure special travel “slots” for Ghanaians ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He stressed that no such “slot” arrangement exists at the Ministry, and urged football fans to be cautious of scammers exploiting public interest in the tournament to collect money under false pretences.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the Minister said neither the Ministry nor its oversight structures had authorised any person or organisation to solicit funds or promise guaranteed travel positions for supporters.
“I don’t know what people mean by slots. There is nothing like slots, that has turned our office into something else,” he stated.
Mr. Adams explained that the Ministry, working through the National Supporters Union, is instead focusing on a structured and transparent selection process to identify genuine supporters who may be sponsored to travel.
He added that the Ministry has engaged travel and tour operators as part of a verification exercise to ensure only credible and qualified service providers are involved in facilitating travel arrangements for fans.
According to him, the process is not about awarding contracts but about vetting operators to prevent fraud and protect citizens from being duped.
“We have not given contracts to any travel and tour company. What we did was to take them through a process of verifying to make sure that at least they are up to standard so that nobody gets duped,” he explained.
The Buem Constituency Member of Parliament further reiterated that his office remains committed to transparency, accountability, and safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaian supporters, while strengthening stakeholder engagement in sports development.
